Quickstart Guide for Blackjack
A quick overview of blackjack.
Blackjack is a game that is easy to learn. You can learn the concepts behind it in just a short period of time. A lot of people are already playing blackjack because it is fun and not so complicated compared to other card games. The following are some simple guides to help you get started.
Before you are given a card by the dealer, you will have to put your bet on the table. The house rules will dictate the minimum bet they allow in the table. When you win a round you will be paid evenly, but if you hit a blackjack, they'll pay you with 3:2. This means that if your bet $5 you win $7.50.
After all the bets are on the table, you will be given two cards and the dealer will take two cards also. One of the dealer's cards will be folded face up so that you can see it. These will give you a look as to what card is the dealer holding. This is termed as “up card”.
The value of each card is equal to its number. This is not the same for aces and cards with faces. Aces can either be 1 or 11. It is for you to decide. The cards with faces from jack to king is equal to 10. In order to win this game, you must have a total card value of 21 or close to it but not more than that. The objective here is to beat the dealer even though you have not achieved the total value of 21.
Another thing to learn as a newbie is the terms and lingos used in general when playing blackjack. Most of them are understandable in a layman's language but have different meaning when used in casinos. The following are the most common ones.
Hit – you draw another card because you are not contented with the card in hand.
Split – this means that if you have the same cards, like two 5s, you separate them and make another hand.
Double down – this means that you are doubling your bet and you can't draw anymore cards.
Surrender – you forfeit your cards and you take back half of your bet. You can only surrender when you have your first two cards.
Most casinos have rules that when a dealer gets a soft seventeen which is an ace and 6, it is a hit. On the other hand if the cards are 10 and 7 it is called hard seventeen.
Now that you know some basic concepts and some blackjack lingo, you are ready to play some real game of blackjack as a newbie.
